Iranian Foreign Relations in the Americas
Though the Americas have traditionally fallen into the sphere of influence of the United States, Iran has begun increasing its trade and political connections with many countries in the region. Venezuela has become a notable and vocal example of Iran’s new associates in Latin America, but other, less outspoken countries that have also warmed to friendly overtures from the Islamic Republic. Bolivia, Ecuador, and Nicaragua have all increased their cooperation with Iran through bilateral trade, high-level state visits, or statements of support for Iran’s nuclear enrichment rights, while Brazil’s Petrobras has cooperated in energy exploration with the National Iranian Oil Company.
