Iranian Foreign Relations in Europe
The European Union has supported all the resolutions against Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and has repeatedly called for the Islamic Republic to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The EU-3, consisting of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, has also worked with the United States to implement greater sanctions against Iran for its failure to comply with IAEA regulations. Despite strained political relations and extensive sanctions against the Islamic Republic, however, the EU remains Iran’s largest trading partner. Additionally, Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has helped Iran build its Bushehr nuclear plant and has supported Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear technology.
